What Year Are We Preparing Our Students For?
Our students must adapt to globalization, and so should we, their teachers. Our classrooms must embed those global competencies which are critically important for our students' success as global citizens. These include intercultural sophistication, including recoginizing others' perspectives, investigating the world through researching domestic and international sources, and developing arguments via multiple perspectives. They have to communicate their ideas well and take action.
Our lessons should reflect these ideas. JSEC teachers are tied to our district's mandate to follow the "Guaranteed and Viable Curriculum" in core content areas. However, the GVC guides are dynamic and thus, we can enhance them by ensuring each lesson embraces 21st Century Skills, a cornerstone of global education.
One way to begin is to add technology into your classes. Watch the following TED presentation to understand why digital competency is global competency.
